A Tiki Bar For the Birds Card

My inspiration card features the exotic Paradise Birds at a lively Tiki Bar. They’re having drinks while “tweeting” together! To make this 5″ X 7″ card, I started with 80lb Neenah Solar White cardstock for the card base and front panel. Since I am coloring the sand on the front panel, I used a separate panel piece so the color does not bleed through to the interior of the card base. On the front panel, I ink blended a little Antique Paper Distress Oxide Ink to the bottom to create the sandy landscape. I added shell bits using my Sakura Classic White Gelly Roll white pen and stones using my brown and black markers.

I stamped, colored and then cut out the birds using the coordinating dies. I colored them in bright colors to fit this festive, party-themed scene. I mixed a few cocktails for the party-goers to drink, too.

To make the Tiki Bar, I cut several scallop layers from pink, yellow, orange and aqua blue cardstock using one side of the Nested Scalloped Frames Die set. I stacked and glued them together and used my paper cutter to cut the sides at a slant, making the wider base canopy shape for the bar. The actual dimensions of the canopy are 3″ wide at the top widening to and 4-7/8″ wide at the bottom.

With a separate piece of white cardstock, I hand drew faux woodgrain using a fine-tip black marker and colored it in using Copic Sketch Markers in E49, E47, E57, E55, E43 and W2 colors. From this woodgrain piece, I cut a  rectangle for the hut’s base and cut additional strips strips from the piece to add “wood trim molding” to the sides and the bar top. Two tall supports to hold the canopy top and a bird’s perch on the right were also cut. All the pieces were glued together to make the bar. I attached the bar to the card front panel, over the sandy floor.

Here’s the actual dimensions of the pieces to make the bar:

  • Bar Base: 3-3/4″ wide X 1-1/2″ tall
  • Bar Top: 3-3/4″ wide X 3/8″ tall
  • Side Moldings: 1/8″ wide X 1-1/8″ tall
  • Canopy Supports: 1-1/4″ wide X 2″ tall
  • Sign: 2-1/4″ wide X 3/4″ tall
  • Bird’s perch: 2″ wide X 1/8″ tall

I added the vibrant birds, a trio of pineapples and a sign to the scene. For the sign, I “hand-carved” the words, “Tiki Bar” using a black marker. I added some faux weather woodgrain to the background and a black and brown imperfect frame round the perimeter. The sign was attached along with four leafy branches and an orchid, all from the same set. Additional extras were attached to finish out the look. I also stamped the sentiment from the set, Rainbow Sentiments stamp set (coordinating dies available) in the bottom right corner, over the sandy scene. A few pink dots were added around the bar patrons like confetti using Copic RV09.
