Lovely Layers: Water Lily Honey Cuts dies

Be Still stamp set and coordinating Honey Cuts dies

Crystal Clear Gem Stickers

I also added a few springs of greenery using one die from the Lovely Layers: Spring Greenery Honey Cuts dies.

The featured project below is made from Neenah 80lb Solar White cardstock for the card base. The card front panel was cut from Canson XL Watercolor paper. All of the black ink stamping was done using Honey Bee’s Bee Creative Intense Black Ink. I use Honey Bee Stamps Bee Creative Precision Glue and for when I want more dimension, Bee Creative Foam Dots With Tab for adhering my elements together. My card is 5″ X 7″ in size.

I was inspired by some beautiful photos of water lilies I saw on the internet that almost looked like watercolor paintings. I chose to use watercolors for the background of this card, blending blues, teals, and greens. I added more green color at the top and a section of the bottom right to resemble abstract lily pads in the distant background and one in the foreground. I changed the water around the pads from blues to teals and made a few linear line reflections in the water for some interest. I kept the background abstract and simple. I’m not an artist so keeping it simple and more abstract makes sense for me! I used my 48 color Kuretake Gansia Tambi inks (Here’s a smaller set available at Honey Bee Stamps) with Canson XL Watercolor paper.

While my watercolor paper background was drying, I started on the water lily and pads. I used the same watercolor paper and added light pinks and yellows for the lily and several shades of green for the leaves. When my paper was dry, I die cut the layers of the lily from the pink and three lily pads and two longer vines from the green paper. It’s important not to die cut the paper until it is fully dry to achieve nice cuts with no tears. I love watercolor because it makes everything more naturally imperfect. However, there are times I like to add a little more definition and depth to the images with my Copics. I added color around some of the edges and in the centers of the pads and lily.

I assembled the lily using my Bee Creative Glue. Between two of the layers, I used foam dots to make the lily stand out. The lily and three pads were attached to the background in the mid-section. I added some vine around the flower, too. I also added white markings using chalks and pencils for a watercolor effect.

To finish the card, I stamped, die cut and attached the sentiment from the Be Still stamp set. I glued it in place. The Bee Creative Glue works great for attaching to watercolor paper. I attached the card front panel to an A7 sized card base made from Neenah 80lb Solar White cardstock. I like to use double-sided tape to adhere watercolor paper to my card base. It holds really well. Glue would work, too. Lastly, I added some Crystal Clear Gem Stickers to the flower petals and lily pads to resemble water droplets.
