It’s summer and time to make a splash with some vibrant colors and these adorable pigs! I’m excited to be guest designing for Hello Bluebird this month. I have been loving so many designs from this company. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on some of its adorable sets. Today, I’m featuring the Beach Babes. How cute are these piggies?! I fell in love with them the first time I saw them. I knew I just had to have this set in my collection. Since it’s August and I love summer and the water,  I decided to bring the beach to these babes. My card features the following Hello Bluebird products:

To make this 5″ X 5″ dimensional card, I started by cutting three pieces of cardstock:

  • I cut an 11″ long X 5″ wide rectangle out of 110lb Neenah Solar White cardstock. I scored at 5″, 9.5″, 10″, and 10.5″. I folded at the score lines. I like to use a heavier weight cardstock for these types of cards. They hold their shape much better.
  • I cut another piece 5.5″ long X 5″ wide for the top of my interior box. I scored the ends of the length at .5″ on each side, creating a 4.5″ X 5″ rectangle for the top. From this piece, I die cut an oval shape in the middle.
  • I also cut a 5″ X 5″ card front out of 80lb Neenah Solar White cardstock. I used a lighter weight to avoid too much bulk/thickness in my card.

I glued in a thin piece of blue, subtle pattern paper I had to the 4.5″ X 5″ section of  the long rectangular piece. This will be the bottom of the pool, viewable from the oval die cut in the top piece. If you don’t have a piece, you can simply create one by coloring this area using blue markers. I used a piece of colored paper instead so that I would not have any bleeding on the back of my card base. Now on to the fun stuff… creating the inside scene.

Inside of Card

I stamped, die cut and colored three of the four cute pigs and the beach ball from the set. (The fourth pig image – the one with the ice cream cone – will be used on the card front (see below.)) I set aside my pigs and ball and worked on the scene.

I wanted to create a scene that looked like a natural waterfall with a plunge pool at the bottom that these pigs could swim in. I started by adding a waterfall to the inside card cover. I used shades of Copic blues to add bubbles and natural streams of water. I also hand drew a stone path and stone wall as well as grassy areas around the water areas. To make the grass, I die cut the grass using the Grassy Knolls dies then colored them in YG shades and adhered them to the bottom of the inside cover.  I added Squeezed Lemonade distressed ink to the open areas for a simple background. I stamped the phrase “Make a splash” and some individual splashes to the inside cover, too.

I didn’t worry about my Copic coloring bleeding through the cover or the inside. You can’t see under the plunge pool opening and the front cover will be covered up once I add the 5″ X 5″ card front piece (created in the next section).

Next I added my pigs to the scene. I hand drew some splashes to add to the plunge pool and trimmed and adhered my pig to it to make it look like the pig was floating in the water. I added the beach ball to the front. The standing pig and splashing pig are on easels so they pop up when the card is opened. My third floating pig was glued on to the waterfall as if he is coming down the fall, right into the pool of water.

Card Front

I wanted to keep the card front simple since there is an explosion of color and activity in the inside of this card. I stamped three pigs, masking the center pig to allow the outer pigs to be positioned behind the top dog (or should I say “top pig.” :)) I also masked the right-hand pig and stamped the beach ball to make it look like he was headed to the beach with a ball in hand.  The pigs were colored again with Copics. I stamped the phrase at the bottom, added shading below the pigs to anchor them and added a little puddle for fun. I like how the right pig is headed right to the fun on this card front. The image was perfect for my application. I love that. 🙂
