Hello friends. I’m freezing in January while a very nasty cold surge hit Wisconsin this weekend. It’s -18 degrees and with windchill feels even colder. I will say these days are perfect for crafting and enjoying the outside from inside! With hot coffee in arms reach, I made this birthday card using fun new products from Brass and Bliss Craft Company. I’m using the following products from the latest release, “Sweet Wishes:”

Waddle you Know stamps and coordinating dies

Party Balloons stamps and coordinating dies

For the basics… my featured project below is made from Neenah 80lb Solar White cardstock for the card base and card front panel. All of the black ink stamping was done using Honey Bee’s Bee Creative Intense Black Ink. I use Honey Bee Stamps Bee Creative Precision Glue and for when I want more dimension, Bee Creative Foam Dots With Tab for adhering my elements together. My blender brushes (large and small) are a must for ink blending color on the background, too. For white highlights, I use my white Gelly Roll pen. My card is 5″ X 7″ in size.

To make this 5″ X 7″ card, I started by stamping and die cutting all these cute penguins from the set, I used the following Copic Sketch Marker colors for the penguins and their party gear: 100, C8, C5, c1, YR09, YR68, R29, B05, YG03, and Y19. I also stamped and die cut two sentiments, one from each of the sets, Waddle you Know stamps and coordinating dies Party Balloons stamps and coordinating dies using black ink and white cardstock.

To create the 5″ X 7″ scene, I used all Copic markers and created some icebergs for the penguins to sit on. This is a one of those scenes where you just have to play with your colors. I chose to use more gray-toned blues to make it look even colder. I hand drew the icebergs using a C1 light gray and then began to build them out with color. Once my icebergs were in place, I added mountains to the background (not sure that makes sense in the artic) and water around the ice blocks. Shadowing is your friend here to make it come together. I darkened my blues where the iceberg edges would shadow the water. I added highlights using my white Gelly Roll pen to show the water rippling around the ice chunks. This is a fun way to work on your scene-building / coloring skills. It’s all blues and grays, but the depth of color really comes in to play to make this scene.

I attached the penguins and added shading using C3 and C1 under and around them for a shadow. The shadowing makes it look more real and grounds the animals to the scene. It’s a subtle detail, but very necessary to make it look right. I added the sentiments and attached the front card panel to a card base made from white cardstock.
